Before their first game in the new year, the Washington Wizards seemed to have some extra pep in their step… a new pre-game intro routine confirmed that. The players huddled in a mass before the announced starter burstout of the pile andonto the scene. It didn’t really work/change much against the New Orleans Hornets on Saturday night, but it was fun to see and to try to take a picture of in the dark nonetheless.
Somehow, some way, you got to party on New Year’s Eve, right?
I kept it relatively chill this year. The GF and I hit up our favorite D.C. restaurant (Hank’s Oyster Bar, with apologies to Fogo de Chao), gorged ourselves on lots and lots of seafood, and then we were back at the apartment by 11 pm to watch the ball drop on TV and savor the awesome meal we’d just ate. Not that drinking and partying with friends and strangers isn’t fun— I’m sure I’ll do something of the sort next time— but this year was one of the best new years I’ve ever had. And no, I’m not getting old.
And neither are the Wiz Kids…
After a 3 pm game in Indiana on New Year’s Eve, and before a 7 pm home game versus the Hornets on New Year’s Day, Andray Blatche found some time to pour some champagne all over himself at the club (viaDC Fab). Meanwhile, John Wall had a‘Dougie’ contest with Chris Brown at Love nightclub on New Year’s Eve (viaYouTube).
Speaking of Wall…
His on-court emotion is infectious… and I wrote about that very thing in my column at the DCist last week. Check it out.

Speaking of Blatche…
You’ve heard the trade rumors, and now it seems like theCleveland Cavaliers are at least asking about him. Here’s some commentary from various subjects around the web:
{Mike Prada - Bullets Forever}
At the end of the day, it looks awful to trade Blatche now, but that doesn’t mean the Wizards should pass on doing it. They have to think about it carefully and not trade him for peanuts, but if a halfway decent offer comes along, they should jump on it. The long-term benefits at this point seem to outweigh the short-term cost.
{Matt Moore - Pro Basketball Talk}
Blatche considers himself a star, even though he’s nothing special on either end, with a decent mid-range jumper and some athleticism. He’s not a player you can build around and acquiring him means he’s the first guy after LeBron you make a significant long-term investment in. That’s not how you want to start off your rebuilding process.
{Royce Young - NBA Facts& Rumors}
Then again, the Cavs are desperate for talent. They’ve lost 16 of 17 and have slipped into the“worst team in the league” discussion. There’s just not much on the roster to be remotely excited about. Mo Williams, Anderson Varejao and Antwan Jamison are quality players, but they aren’t good enough to make up for a seriously awful bench.

Leading into the New Year’s holiday weekend, I did a Q&A about Gilbert Arenas with Eddy Rivera of the TrueHoop Network’s Orlando Magic blog.

Nick Young, Hamady N’diaye and Hilton Armstrong go to a French restaurant in Georgetown with Kevin Seraphin, try some snails, act predictably goofy… unfortunately, Seraphin wears an Ed Hardy t-shirt.
